Café De Miserie

Highlight • Cafe

In the past 2 years, recordings for the fiction series "Chantal" took place at various locations in the Westhoek. The series takes place in the fictional village of Loveringem. Inspector Chantal and Sheriff Cloedt, played by Maaike Cafmeyer and Dries Heyneman respectively, are the protagonists. The first series was shown on TV at the beginning of this year and a second series by Chantal has already been recorded. The tourist services of Alveringem and Lo-Reninge, together with Toersime Westhoek, have now mapped out a cycle route of approximately 45 km along various film locations and various sights in both municipalities. The cycle route can be followed on the basis of specific signposts. The renowned café "In de Miserie" could of course not be missed along the route. The Bar/tabac on the French border in Beveren-IJzer was previously a youth house/inn "Zacheus" that was only open for youth movements in the summer, a folk café "The Busker" and later became a well-known restaurant "De Zalitude". Because the restaurant moved to a different location, the vacant café/restaurant could be used for the recordings. The saloon is one of the many eye-catchers along the route.

The Yser at Roesbrugge

Highlight • River

In Roesbrugge you have the choice between life and death - related to the river. Because the city center is located along the river IJser (i.e. the "living" river). The backwater of this river, the Flemish name "Tote IJzer", forms the northern border of the city center.

Roesbrugge is known as the "charming village of the Westhoek". In earlier times it was a prosperous city. A village with a rich trading history that has preserved its heritage: the three-nave Sint Martinus church, the old town hall and the many town houses still characterize the townscape today.

Not far from the church is the Werbrouck brewery. Be sure to try the caramel Dubel Bruin with a decent 8 percent alcohol.

Sint-Martinuskerk Roesbrugge

Highlight • Religious Site

Within a stone's throw of each other, in the region around Poperinge, there are two churches dedicated to Saint Martin, namely the church in Haringe and the church in Roesbrugge. However, the history of both churches is far apart. The church in Roesbrugge is a lot younger than the church in Haringe. No remains of the first 15th century mentions of the chapel have been preserved. The hall church, built in the 17th-18th century, had to replace the chapel. The church suffered serious damage once in its existence, during the Second World War. Several memorial plaques hang on the left outer wall of the church. A number also commemorate the First World War. During the First World War, the church tower served as a receiving and transmitting post for communication via telegraph and telephone.

Watou Village and St. Bavo Church

Highlight • Settlement

Watou and St Bavo's Church host a world famous festival of Gregorian music every 3 years. St Bavo comes from the Romantic era and has a very beautiful organ. The small village is also worth a visit in between, especially because of the good restaurants. We particularly recommend de Paterstafel and 't Hommelhof.
