Simandlbrunnen Raggendorf

Highlight • Monument

The Simandl fountain in Raggendorf is made of sandstone and bronze and shows a naked female figure who holds her hands graciously and superiorly over the man's head. The rolling pin refers to the Simandl fountain in Krems. The structure was designed in 1996 by the artist Virgilius Moldovan.

Simandl is an expression used to describe a spouse who is subordinate to the lady of the house. In the 16th and 17th centuries the word was very common and is derived from the words "male woman" or "she-male".

Raggendorf Castle

Highlight • Castle

The first records of the castle date back to 1369. Originally called Rackendorf, the castle and estates have often changed hands over the centuries. In 1556 the knight Christoph Zoppl acquired the castle. He has jurisdiction in Rackendorf with 31 subjects and his tombstone with life-size armor can still be seen in the parish church. After his death, Raggendorff is owned by various noble families, including those of Herberstein, Sonnau and Liechtenstein.

The castle is now owned by Norbert Klenkhart. It was completely restored in 2012. Since 2016 it can be rented for weddings, private parties, seminars and other festivities.

Nexing Castle and Muschelberg

Highlight • Castle

Landscape garden with geological features
Nexing Castle, built in the English Tudor style, is located in the middle of the rolling hills of the Weinviertel. Right behind it is a romantic landscape garden that was built in 1802. When the garden was created, there was an orangery and numerous flowers, shrubs and fruit. Since the interwar period, the complex has increasingly fallen into disrepair until the Urani family made the garden accessible to the public again. "You could still see the paths, but they were completely overgrown," remembers Peter Urani. Grotto-like rock parts and a bridge made of roughly hewn boulders are still preserved from the decorative structures.

The real attraction is the Nexing Shell Hill: a huge, approx. 12.5 to 13.5 million year old collection of shells from the Sarmatian period. "Geologists from faraway countries don't know Austria, but they do know Nexing," says Mr. Urani about the uniqueness. “A fossil wonder from a scientific point of view and worth seeing for all visitors!”

The dried-out pond landscape has also been revitalized and is now managed by Mr. Urani as a carp farm. Visitors can enjoy their specialties in the “Oase am Teich” inn. Pretty double rooms or camping options invite you to stay longer.

The white cross on the outskirts of Raggendorf is a nicely tended cross where I stop every time because you also have a nice background for taking photos that looks a little different every time.
