Zoerselhof Castle

Highlight • Castle

The current building, with rooms for the abbot and the provost, was built in 1787 by the provost Bonifacius De Wolf. He managed the estates of the Hemiksem monastery, a former Cistercian abbey in the municipality of Hemiksem in the province of Antwerp. Since then, the farm has served as a children's home, a guesthouse, a hotel-restaurant, and finally a castle. Nowadays, you could live there – with the necessary cash.

Groot Boshuis 1828

Highlight • Historical Site

The Groot Boshuis, also known as Villa Zoerselbos, dates from 1828, as stated in the gable.
In 1828, a large part of the Zoerselbos was purchased by Messrs. De Groter and De Cock, who immediately founded a company to exploit the forest. The demand for wood in mining was high at the time. This farm, which consists of the former stable house, long barn and a baking oven, was built for this purpose.

Halse spui: one of the infrastructures with which the traditional fluid management was maintained. The Tappelbeek was dammed up, the water ran over the adjacent meadows via canals to the Binnenste Monnikenloop, and the water was thus drained back. Possibilities are being examined whether management such as bleeds is possible again in the future. The quality of the Tappelbeek will also be a determining factor in this regard.

Zoerselbos Visitor Center

Highlight • Rest Area

Since 1999, the volunteers of the Friends of the Zoerselbos have kept the Zoerselbos visitor center open. This is the central meeting place where you can find all information about the area, where all activities take place and where the walks depart from. Admission to the visitor center and the exhibition is always free.
The visitor center is open on all weekends and public holidays and also on Fridays during school holidays. You can come there from 1 p.m. to 5 p.m. At the back of the visitor center you will find the old-fashioned farm room. Here you can view photos that illustrate what it looked like many years ago. Furthermore, a number of antique pieces that used to be part of the contents of the forest house are exhibited. If you go outside through the farm room, you are in the middle of a traditional farm flower garden. Here are many species that are typical of post-war farm flower gardens. A number of species are becoming increasingly rare. The green shop does offer self-grown seed.

Picnic spot Berkemei

Highlight • Forest

At the end of the Berkemei against the Zoerselbos is a respectable oak. A tree chapel has hung here since time immemorial, as one often finds at intersections of important roads. The road from Zandhoven to Brecht crossed here with one of the two roads from Halle to Zoersel. The chapel had disappeared in the late 1970s. The then young Friends of the Zoerselbos association decided to provide a new chapel.
