Road 1392 Scenic Route to Tramelan

Highlight • Cycleway

Road 248 has a lot of heavy traffic on it going into Tramelan, so if Tramelan is your destination, you will have to tolerate heavy traffic for 2km. After Tramelan, the traffic seems to disappear. As a conciliation prize, the asphalted road is very smooth with no rough spots.

Grotto of Sainte-Colombe

Highlight • Cave

Impressive grotto and pilgrimage site. You should really stop here and enjoy the gentle coolness and fill your bottle with the water from the Karlsquelle (which is said to have healing powers).

Inside the grotto, a small karst spring rises. The water flows as a trickle from a stalagmite into a shallow basin. There is a crucifix under the entrance arch of the grotto, which is dedicated to Saint Columba of Sens, a martyr from the 3rd century. Since the 13th century, the place has been the destination of a pilgrimage that takes place on August 15th. The spring water is said to have miraculous healing powers.

Sorne Gorge Road (Gorges du Pichoux)

Highlight (Segment) • Gorge

The trip through the Sorne Gorge is worth it both up and down. The change in scenery is dramatic and unexpected. At the upper end of the Sorne Gorge lies the lovely pastureland around Bellelay, a well-known centre for horse breeding.
At the lower end lies Undervelier, in the fairly densely populated Soulce Valley. In between is this gorge, where the Sorne has eaten its way into the limestone in a spectacular way, creating a fantastic landscape.
The road layout in this narrow gorge contributes to this fascinating section, the Sorne bubbles, gurgles and rushes next to the road.
Definitely plan for this if you are travelling in the region!

Sornetan Church

Highlight • Religious Site

The Sornetan Temple is the most original 18th-century temple surviving in the Bernese Jura. It was built between 1708 and 1709 to replace the village church of Sapran, which was abandoned after a plague epidemic, and restored in 1965 by Charles Kleiber in collaboration with Hans von Fischer. In 1963 the church and its surroundings were classified as historical monuments. It is a single-hall church, typical of the architecture of Calvinist temples, which serves as a cross hall. The importance of the church lies in the fact that the original arrangement of the pulpit and pews has been preserved.
