"Moerput" is the name of a neighborhood in the municipality of Geluwe. The name refers to a wooden oil windmill that stood here (on the side of Beselarestraat) from 1775 to 1886. The neighborhood itself isn't an interesting walking area, but a wooden bridge surrounded by greenery does provide a nice gateway to the neighborhood.

In Memoriam Monument Geluwe

The In Memoriom Monument commemorates the men of the 2nd Cavalry Division who fell during the final days of the Eighteen Days' Campaign (May 10-28, 1940). From May 25, 1940, they defended the Dadizele-Geluwe-Wervik front line and were composed of remnants of the following regiments: 1st Lancers, 2nd Lancers, 3rd Lancers, and 2nd Chasseurs à la Père (cavalry regiments on motorcycles and armored cars), 2nd Carabiniers-Cyclists (infantry regiment on bicycles), and 18th Artillery (74mm guns).

After the fighting, 36 Belgians, 39 Germans, and one Briton were buried in Geluwe. The shelling also claimed the lives of 10 civilians.
