Description
The Foster Falls – Fries Junction loop from Fries is one of those touring cycling routes that truly delivers on scenic beauty and historical charm. This difficult 43.0-mile (69.2 km) touring cycling route, with 1275 feet (388 metres) of elevation gain, takes about 6 hours and 4 minutes to complete. It's a fantastic option if you're looking for a longer, mixed-terrain ride with plenty of river views and interesting landmarks, suitable for cyclists with very good fitness.
What to expect on Foster Falls – Fries Junction loop from Fries
As you cycle the Foster Falls – Fries Junction loop, you'll follow the historic New River, enjoying continuous views of the water, rolling pastures, and forested areas. Keep an eye out for the impressive Fries Junction Bridge, a particularly long and curvy trestle, and consider the short detour to the historic Jackson Ferry Shot Tower. While much of the New River Trail is known for its gentle slopes, be prepared for mixed surfaces; about 41% is unpaved gravel or dirt, so appropriate tires are a good idea. Despite the "difficult" rating, the elevation changes are mild, making the challenge more about the distance than steep climbs. This route is best for touring cyclists who enjoy a long day in the saddle and appreciate a blend of natural beauty and historical sites.
Planning your visit
Parking is available at the start in Fries. The trail is shared with hikers and horseback riders, so practice trail courtesy, especially around horses. Given the length, starting early in the day is advisable to allow ample time. The New River Trail State Park is generally accessible, but always check for any seasonal conditions or closures before you head out.
