Damse Vaart

Highlight (Segment) • River

The Damse Vaart is a canal that connects Bruges with the Westerschelde near Sluis in the Netherlands. Napoleon Bonaparte ordered it to be built, which is why it is often called Napoleonvaart. He wanted to create a network of waterways to move his troops undisturbed from one part of the country to the other.

In the meantime the Vaart has lost its strategic and economic importance, since the end of the Second World War only excursion boats have been sailing here. The aesthetic appeal, however, is still there, especially when the weather is clear you can see wonderfully far. If it has been freezing long enough, the canal becomes even more attractive - for friends (more or less) graceful figures. Because when the ice is 12 centimeters thick, the mayor releases the area for ice skating.

Saint Quentin's Church, Oostkerke

Highlight • Religious Site

People often talk about the polder churches with their flat towers as a triumvirate, referring to three churches that have such a tower: Oosterke, Damme and Lissewege. The church of St. Anna Ter Muyden is often wrongly "forgotten". It is quite possible that the church tower of Oostkerke used to serve as a lighthouse for skippers, given its location on the Zwin estuary, but this has not yet been proven with certainty. The cemetery is said to contain a number of exceptional gravestones from the 14th and 15th centuries.

The Burnt Fort

Highlight • Historical Site

Do you still smell it The smell of burned wood? No, just kidding, that should be impossible. Because the fire we are talking about dates back hundreds of years. So if it smells burnt, it's because someone nearby is baking stick bread on a campfire.

But back to the history of the place: In 1703, during the War of the Spanish Succession, French troops built a hill here, i.e. a fortification, in order to be able to better defend the larger Fort van Beieren (more of it has survived, by the way - take a look at it !).

The hill belonged to the classic type of a square hill with a ditch, a forecourt and a defensive wall. In the middle was a wooden watchtower that burned down at some point, hence the name "Burned Fort".

Today the area of the former fort is a protected nature reserve with wet meadows. Here you can watch geese, water birds and meadow birds foraging for food.

Damme is a city known for its historic charm and beautiful walking routes, and the market square is the beating heart of these attractions. The square is surrounded by characteristic, restored buildings in brick and natural stone, which reflect the rich history of the city.
