Sint-Mildredakerk Izenberge

Highlight • Religious Site

It is a three-aisled brick hall church in late Gothic style, with the north choir dating from the 14th century, the south aisle from the 16th century and the north aisle from the 17th century. The central nave is from the 15th and 16th centuries. The built-in crossing tower has a square plan, is originally Romanesque and may date from around 1200. Restoration work took place in 1938 and 1948.

Sint-Pieterskerk Gijverinkhove

Highlight • Religious Site

Probably a Romanesque church building was initially erected that had no tower and no transept. Presumably at the end of the 13th century, an early Gothic tower was built in the middle of the building. In 1540 important changes took place, especially in the tower. In 1913 the church was modified according to a design by Alfons de Pauw, whereby the side aisles were widened. The transept was also constructed at that time and the sacristy was added in Flemish neo-Renaissance style.

Saint Martin's Church, Leisele

Highlight • Religious Site

The first mention of a parish dates from 1222, and the right of patronage was held by the Abbey of Mont-Saint-Éloi. Remnants of a then existing Romanesque church, built in iron sandstone, are still present in the central west wall of the current church. Subsequently, a late Gothic hall church was built in the first quarter of the 16th century. In 1583 there was a fire, after which the church was rebuilt. In 1609 this was completed on the nave, the transept and the crossing tower. A stair turret was added in 1855.

In 1908 the church was badly hit by fire, but was restored in 1910.

Houtem is on the list of the 50 most beautiful villages in Flanders. Only about 650 people live here. It's a little out of the way in De Moeren, near the French border. The headquarters of the Belgian army was located here for a long time during the First World War.

Sint-Gustaafsmolen

Highlight • Monument

The Sint-Gustaafsmolen was built in the early 19th century and was used to drain the moors. After it was no longer used, it slowly deteriorated. The wings are missing, but the stone tower is still well preserved. The current owner had it renovated in the 1980s and now runs his studio inside.
