Christ Church, Henley-on-Thames

Highlight • Other

This United Reformed Church building was opened in 1908.

Designed by Hampden W. Pratt, it is an impressive brick structure with yellow stone dressings, gothic-style tracery, and flamboyant Art Nouveau glass — a clear statement of the Congregationalists’ importance in the town.

In 1995 a new building project was initiated to encompass the church and halls all within a covered concourse as well as adding modern halls and a small chapel.
This new community centre, called the Christ Church Centre, was opened at the church in 2000.

St Paul's Church, Highmoor Cross

Highlight • Religious Site

'Parish church, built as chapel of ease 1859. Designed by Joseph Morris of Reading; built by Robert Owthwaite of Henley-on-Thames. Nave, chancel, single-storey vestry to south.

[...]

St. Paul's is a simple but pleasing mid Victorian church, little if at all altered. It is by a local architect and makes a positive contribution to Highmoor, notably through the predominant use of flint which is a distinctive local building material. The church represents the High Victorian desire to improve the provision of places of worship in rural areas such as this.'

The Unicorn Pub, Sonning Common

Highlight (Segment) • Pub

Heading north from Sonning Common, this represents a steady climb that I always find deceptive. Having started from Sonning and Playhatch, I'm always fooled that I'm 'already on the top', but this section always reminds me how much higher the Chilterns go up!!

Devil's Hill Climb

Highlight (Segment) • Trail

Nice quiet lanes away from traffic connecting Henley with Sonning.

There is some climbing to be done (clue is in the name) but it isn't terrible and it's not too long, so definitely worth choosing over the main roads.
