Centurion Way: Chichester to Lavant

Highlight (Segment) • Structure

The Centurion Way is a popular walking and cycling path running from Chichester to West Dean.

It follows the route of the former Chichester to Midhurst railway line and the path is named after the Roman centurions who once walked these lands during the Roman occupation of Britain.

The section between Chichester and Lavant passes through a beautiful open space and is dotted with interesting sculptures and welcoming picnic areas. The terrain is tarmac throughout and there's a gentle south to north incline.

Highlight • Monument

The bridge before the flats that occupy the site of the old Lavant station is decorated with animal cut-outs. The sculptures were created from sheet steel by sculptor Richard Farringdon from drawings by children from Lavant Primary School.

West Dean Woods is a biological Site of Special Scientific Interest managed by the Sussex Wildlife Trust.

The landscape is dominated by majestic pines and coppiced hazel. There's an excellent well-surfaced track running from the South Downs Way at Cocking Hill to Colworth Down, just north of West Dean village.

View of Sussex Countryside from Dew Pond

Highlight • Natural Monument

Scenic viewpoint with a bench next to a dew pond overlooking the Sussex countryside towards the east.

The construction of dew ponds began in the South Downs during the 11th century, when traditional water sources such as streams and wells were not readily available. They provide a vital source of water for grazing livestock, particularly during the summer months when streams and other water sources may dry up.
