Loch Leven Stone Bridge

Highlight • Historical Site

This medieval bridge now looks rather incongruous in a field on its own next to the modern road. Back in the day, before Loch Leven was reduced in depth in the 1830s to yield more agricultural land, it extended to here. It was to this bridge that Mary Queen of Scots was rowed when she escaped form Loch Leven castle after some two years captivity on an island which was also much smaller than it is now. The bridge no longer goes anywhere, but the weathered stone plaques recall the event. Taking horse here, she was also not going anywhere other than Fotheringhay and eventual execution.
