Nottingham Canal

Highlight • River

The Nottingham Canal originally travelled a distance of 14 miles (22.5 km) from the Cromford Canal to the River Trent at Nottingham, but most of it is now in a variety of various states of use and preservation, with only a 2.5 miles (4 km) section through the centre of Nottingham still used by boats. The remainder of the canal towpath is used for a variety of recreational activities, including cycling.

Bennerley Viaduct viewpoint

Highlight • Historical Site

Great viewing point of the Bennerley viaduct situated on the side of the Nottingham canal. The viaduct once carried the Great Northern railway between Nottingham Victoria and Derby Friar Gate. Now one of only 2 wrought iron viaducts in England with long term plans to restore the structure and to link it into the cycle network. Whilst no official access to the viaduct, many people climb the embankments at each end and walk across the structure. Not possible to take a bike across (unless you carry it the whole way). The restoration plans have stalled due to lack of funds. More information at friendsofbennerleyviaduct.wordpress.com

Attenborough Nature Reserve

Highlight • Lake

This is a river path that's really easy and tranquil to ride along. There are numerous ponds and it's a really popular bird-watching spot. From the trail you'll reach a fork at one point and you can either keep following the river or take the turning and head into the nature reserve (£3 donation). If you want to take a closer look at the birds you can go into the nature reserve office and obtain a pass to access the bird hides.

On weekends it gets really busy so having a bell is advisable or time your route so that you pass here in the mornings or late afternoon.
