Melandstjønn to Aslakstaulvatn Trail

Highlight (Segment) • Trail

The section from Melandstjønn to Aslakstaulvatn offers a transition into more rugged terrain as you continue your ascent toward Gaustatoppen. The trail becomes rockier, with increasing elevation gain and more exposed landscapes. This 2-3 km stretch climbs approximately 300 meters, taking you through sparse vegetation, with large boulders and rocky surfaces dominating the path.

As you move away from the wooded areas around Melandstjønn, the terrain becomes more alpine, with expansive views of the surrounding valleys. The lake Aslakstaulvatn provides a scenic resting point amidst the rugged landscape. The trail is moderately difficult here, requiring careful footing over rocks and light scrambling at times. Weather conditions can make the path slippery, especially after rain.

This section prepares you for the more demanding climbs ahead, offering breathtaking views and a tranquil atmosphere before tackling the steeper terrain that follows

Gaustatoppen Summit Cabin

Highlight • Mountain Hut

Up above, almost at the summit, there's a hut. Those who want to spend the night and descend early the next morning must make a reservation. To enjoy one of the delicious waffles, simply stand in line and top it with strawberry or cherry. Those who don't feel like descending can take the cable car. The "Gaustahnen" cable car runs inside the mountain, below the antenna. The cable car was built between 1954 and 1959, during the Cold War. It runs between the listening station (antenna) and the village of Rjukan in the valley. After the end of the Cold War, the cable car was opened to the public. The cable car consists of two tracks: a flat track (850 m) and a steep cable car (1045 m incline).

Gaustatoppen Turisthytte is famous for it's waffles – incredibly it sells over 50,000 a year. It's the ideal fuel after the long pull up towards Gaustatoppen's summit ridge. Built in 1893, this DNT hut is available to book and serves other food beyond waffles and drink too.

Stavsro

Highlight • Rest Area

Stavsro is the common starting point for an adventure on Gaustatoppen. As well as parking, there's a cafe here that specialises in regional rømmegrøt, a porridge made with sour cream, milk, and a bit of flour, and then topped with cinnamon and sugar. Of course, it also sells waffles.

There is a free parking spot across from the Hytta. Many locals park here too. Save yourself the parking fees for the large lot.
