From the Staithe, there are several, waymarked circular walks that take in the Wherryman's Way and part of the National Cycle Network. There's ample free parking and a pub across the road for when you've finished.

Wildflowers at Thorpe Marshes

Located on the edge of Norwich, Thorpe Marshes is a wonderful nature reserve managed by Norfolk Wildlife Trust. Close to the River Yare, the area is covered in wildflower marshes and dykes. You can spot many species of dragonfly, damselfly and butterfly here, as well as various waterbirds.

Whitlingham Great Broad

Whitlingham Great Broad is a man-made lake in the Whitlingham Country Park. Huge amounts of material, quarried from the area, was used in construction projects nearby. Today, the area is a beautiful lake, popular with walkers, cyclists and watersports enthusiasts. At one end of the lake, there's an ancient forest and remnants of chalk pits and a Lime kiln.

Don't miss the gravel track on the right that leads to the church. You can reach the car park for Venta Icenorum by walking round to the other side of the churchyard.

Known by the Romans as "the market of the Iceni" (Venta Icenorum) this was one of the strongholds of the Iceni Tribe. It was the centre of the revolt led by Queen Boudicca against the Roman invasion in AD 60/61.

Today the site is one of three major British/Roman towns which has not been built on. Roman embankments and fortifications can be seen today.
