Kirkcaldy Roperie Walk and West Bridge Mill

Highlight • Settlement

In the past, this is where the entrance to the roperie building was. The roperie walk was built in 1850 by a local boat builder and twine manufacturer of fibre ropes e.g. hemp. Originally it measured 656 ft or 200 m in length from North to South, but the building was soon extended to 1227 ft or 374 m. In 1896, it was owned by the Forth & Clyde Roperie Company who also bought the the West Bridge Mill (Photo circa1967) located just across the road by the Tiel Burn in 1936. Originally, this mill was founded in 1806 by Messrs F and W Hendry to spin flax for weaving by hand with local weavers spinning sisal, jute, hemp and binder twines twisted from soft fibres. In the 1990’s, the old mill was was converted to flats and during the construction they discovered a maze of ‘cundies’ water channels, designed to tie in with external sluice water into the mill, approximately 6-8 deep feet below the building.

He was born in Kirkcaldy.
