Alloa Harbour and Old Docks

Highlight • Historical Site

If you are visiting the Old Alloa Docks, you can enjoy a glimpse of the past when Alloa was a bustling river port with ships trading with Scandinavia and the Low Countries. You can see the remains of the dry dock, built in 1790, and the wet dock, built in 1863, as well as some of the old industrial buildings that have been regenerated. You can also learn about the history of the port, which dates back to the 16th century, and how it served the local coal, salt, glass and brewing industries. The port closed in 1970 due to competition from larger and more modern ports. The Old Alloa Docks are located on The Shore, near the River Forth.

Alloa Tower

Highlight • Monument

Take a whistle-stop tour through 700 years of Scottish history at Scotland’s largest and oldest keep, the ancestral home of the influential Erskine family, the Earls of Mar and Kellie.

The walls of this medieval tower tell some incredible stories and even come complete with their own dungeon! As you explore the tower’s four floors, you’ll hear tales of an abbot’s curse, crib ghosts, fortunes and titles lost and regained, and the building’s ruin and restoration.

The tower is packed with arresting architectural anomalies, such as the stone well built into the tower walls and the magnificent vaulted beamed ceiling. You will see artworks on display by Henry Raeburn and Van Dyck, along with precious china, silverware, period costumes and furnishings.

The ancestral home of the Erskine family, the Earls of Mar and Kellie, Alloa Tower is one of Scotland’s largest surviving medieval tower houses. It has been altered over the centuries and is now an 18th-century mansion contained within a medieval shell. The Tower is home to an important collection of portraits, silver and furniture, which are loaned from the family’s private collections.

Clackmannan Tolbooth

Highlight • Historical Site

The Tolbooth in Clackmannan was built in the late 16th century primarily due to the wishes of William Menteith, the local sheriff, who was no longer inclined to hold prisoners in his own dwelling house. All that remains now is the belfry tower.

Beside this is the ancient standing stone of Mannan, associated with two stories - one of the Sea God Mannau, the other concerning Robert the Bruce's lost glove (or mannan). It is thought that this originally stood on an island in the River Forth. Nearby is the Mercat Cross, a solitary pillar bearing the arms of the Bruce family.

The church of St Serf was rebuilt in 1632 but was abandoned in the 1980s when the congregation merged with that of the Eadie Church. It was demolished after a fire in 1985. Its ‘footprint’ and some inscribed stones remain, along with some interesting early gravestones in the kirkyard. The Erskine family, cousins of the Earls of Mar, had a burial vault beneath the church and there is a plaque in memory of Dr Robert Erskine (1677-1718), who was Chief Physician to Tzar Peter the Great.

The Johnstone Mausoleum was designed by Robert and James Adam for John Johnstone (1734–1795), who bought the Alva estate from James Erskine, Lord Alva, in 1775. Johnstone built the mausoleum c1790, following the death of his wife. Columns of the Greek Doric order flank the entrance, supporting a triangular pediment. It is one of only four Adam mausolea in Scotland. Johnstone, his wife and several of their descendants are buried in the original mausoleum: an eastern extension was added in the 19th century to accommodate additional burials. The mausoleum has been restored and a glass roof has replaced the pitched roof of the 19th century extension.

The Old Kirkyard was restored as part of the Historic Kirkyards Trail project of the Ochils Landscape Partnership programme.
