Vitt fishing village

Highlight • Settlement

The idyllic and somewhat remote fishing village invites you to stop off in the warm months with many small cafés. From the beach you already have a great view of the cliffs.

The beach of Vitt can only be reached via the riverside gorge, in which the fishing village of Vitt is also located.
It is very rocky and begs you to look for chicken gods. 😀
But you can also just sit on the beach, listen to the sound of the waves and let your gaze wander over the water.
From here you have a very nice view towards Cape Arkona and you can see the bearing tower.

While strolling along the beach to the fishing village Vitt you can find beautiful stones. In Vitt itself there is something to eat, drink and souvenirs.

The Jaromarsburg

In the middle of the castle stood the temple in 1168 with the oversized wooden image of the four-headed god Svantevit.

The remains of the Arkona Temple Castle are an important testimony to Slavic cultural history in the Baltic Sea region. Protected on three sides by the cliffs and on the land side by a 25 meter high rampart, it was a place of worship for the natives of Rügen from the 6th to the 12th century - the Slavic Ranen. With the conquest and destruction of the sanctuary under the leadership of Bishop Absalon of Roskilde in 1168, the Christianization of the islanders was initiated. The Danish historian Saxo Grammaticus was an eyewitness to this decisive event. Only the descriptions in the 14th book of his "Historia Danica" have handed down details of how the Ranenburg looked before it was destroyed.

Natural erosion at the cape over the centuries has caused much of the inner castle to collapse into the Baltic Sea and have been swallowed up by the sea. For the excavation team and its leader Fred Ruchthöft, it is a race against time to secure the archaeological finds. For example, the archaeologists literally brought to light a spearhead, arrowheads, pearls and a spur. Imposing cultural-historical individual pieces from the archaeological excavations from inside the ramparts are exhibited in the observation tower.

From Gellort, the northernmost point of the island of Rügen, it is only about 70 kilometers to Sweden and just over 50 kilometers to the island of Mon (Denmark). If the visibility is good, the chalk cliffs of Mon can be seen from Gellort.

September 22, 2024,Insel Rügen: Kap Arkona – der nördlichste Punkt Rügens
Of course! If you're hiking on Rügen, you'll also look at the northernmost point, Cape Arkona. The 43-meter-high chalk cliff is really very impressive. And the lighthouses give you a real coastal feeling. It's possible that it didn't just stop at a fish sandwich.

Easter holidays 🎊...we're conquering Rügen. In my opinion, the most beautiful island in Germany 💖, with stunning beaches, a tranquil lagoon landscape, ancient tree culture, and a unique national park. No matter the season or the weather, the island has always been beautiful. Today we explored the northernmost part of Rügen🔜 Cape Arcona with its lighthouses. This is, of course, …

Last day on Rügen.
We wanted to see Cape Arkona. We decided on the car park on the north beach. An absolute dream beach. Wide, beautiful sand and, at least today, almost deserted. The cape itself was much busier. The view from the lighthouse is really spectacular. Unfortunately, we didn't make it to the bunker exhibition. Mrs. Dog and I …

Rügen without Kap Arkona, that's not possible⁉️
After we aborted the tour the day before yesterday, today followed the 2nd, successful attempt.
Compared to the fantastic hikes of the last few days, today's was slightly less impressive, but it certainly had its own charm.

Cape Arkona was the destination of today's tour.
At first it was very nice sunny weather, but then a few patches of fog quickly rolled in...
No problem with the strong wind...
Next to the two lighthouses there is also a huge bunker complex of the GDR-NVA Navy, which can of course now be visited. The tour lasts at least …

Today we walked a route according to the hiking guide (warning: unpaid advertising) from Kompass Verlag.
It started at the parking lot on the north beach near Cape Arkona. Here you can also get to the beach, but we left that right at the beginning. We walked along the path along the high shore, but after a while we made …
