Northern Spire Bridge

Highlight • Cycleway

Sunderland's best feature.. as much as I like this bridge the 118 million would have been much better invested in the city centre. It is located about 2.5 mile west of the Wearmouth bridge on National Cycle Route 7.

View of Roker Pier and Lighthouse

Highlight • Monument

Roker Pier (also known as the New North Pier) marks the end of the C2C. The striking pier was opened in 1903 and has become a defining feature on the seafront here. There's also a good little cyclist cafe and plenty of places for coffee and a bacon sarnie – no doubt a much welcome sight after a long adventure on your bike.

The Fleet sculpture at Captain's Wharf in South Shields is an artwork by Irene Brown, created in 2004. It consists of seven highly polished stainless steel collier brigs—historic sailing ships formerly used for transporting coal. These sculptures are placed in a basin that once served as a dry dock for shipbuilding and repair, thus directly referencing the location's maritime history.
