Wickham has had a mill since at least since the time of the Domesday Book in 1086. The present building dates from 1820. It was built using timbers salvaged from the USS Chesapeake which was captured by the English frigate HMS Shannon in 1813 off Boston. Grinding ceased in 1986. The mill was used as a grain and fertiliser store until it closed in 1991. Bruce Tappenden, the last miller, continued to live in the Mill House until his death in 2002. He is commemorated by a blue plaque on the wall of Mill House, to the left of the Mill

When the mill was built, the river on the north side of the bridge was covered and the water ran through culverts. At this time there was no piped water supply in the village. The Dip Hole was created by building a short flight steps thus allowing villagers to draw water safely from the river. It was popular with drivers, who used it to fill their steam tractors, and with children who used to fish and play.

The Dip Hole is behind the wooden fence in the photo of the mill.

The Meon Valley Trail is a 10-mile (16km) multi-user, surfaced trail and a former railway line. Running between Knowle and West Meon, it explores the scenic Meon Valley, passing Butser Hill - the highest point on the South Downs Way.

Highlight • Rest Area

Not the end of the Meon Valley trail, but a good point to divert (and explore the picturesque town of Wickham). About a dozen fairly steep steps down from the trail to a small green next to the road.
