Pen-y-Pass

Highlight • Parking

Right in the heart of northern Eryri (Snowdonia), Pen-y-Pass is superbly located for adventures on the Yr Wyddfa (Snowdon) massif and the Glyderau. It is a popular starting point for the Miners' and Pyg Tracks to Yr Wyddfa, as well as for the exciting scrambles on Crib Goch.

The excellent youth hostel has a rich mountaineering heritage. It was famously the haunt of George Mallory, who became part of Everest legend when he died attempting to be the first person to climb the world's highest peak in 1924. Whether or not he ever made it to the summit is one of the greatest mysteries in adventure history. The hostel's Mallory's Bar, is named in his honour.

The Zigzags – Pyg and Miners Tracks

Highlight (Segment) • Trail

The top section of the Pyg & Miners Tracks up Yr Wyddfa (Snowdon) is known as the zigzags. The path gets steeper and rockier as it climbs this section. It's hard running, and most people will be power walking by now anyway. You pop out at Bwlch Glas by the finger stone.
When it's freezing this section can be really slippery and icy, micro spikes on your running shoes!

Bwlch Glas Pass

Highlight • Natural Monument

The finger stone at Bwlch Glas marks the point at which the Pyg and Miners' Tracks reach the summit ridge and join the Crib Goch, Ranger and Llanberis Paths. Particularly helpful in poor visibility.

Snowdon Summit (Yr Wyddfa)

Highlight • Summit

Snowdon (Yr Wyddfa) is perhaps the most ascended mountain in the world, and with good reason. This is a majestic mountain, as is befitting of Wales' highest point.

Its glory lies in the myriad routes to the summit. There's everything from the gentle inclines of the Llanberis path to the knife-edged arête of Crib Goch. The south side of the mountain is generally quieter, with the South Ridge in particular a fine route up. The Miners' and Pyg Tracks are straightforward, classic approaches that enter the incredible natural amphitheatre that holds Llyn Llydaw and Glaslyn.

To get the summit to yourself, rise early and avoid peak season.

Snowdon Mountain Railway

Highlight (Segment) • Structure

Instead of a lame cablecar, the Snowdon can be reached by a beautiful oldfashioned rack and pinion train. Beside four diesel engines build in the late 1980s, there are several Steam Engines on the Snowdon Mountain Railway. These engines had been especially build for this railway back in 1896.

-------------------------------------------------- ------

Instead of a boring cable car, a dreamlike and old-fashioned cog railway leads up to the summit of Snowdon. In addition to more modern diesel locomotives still drive several steam locomotives on the track. These locomotives were manufactured exclusively for the Snowdon Mountain Railway in 1896 and are still doing their job reliably.

Very popular path at any time of the year but the easiest path up Snowdon.

Cromlech Boulders

Highlight • Climb

Right opposite the layby are the two main blocks - a good description and link to the topo is at climber.co.uk/outdoor/bouldering/around-the-bloc-the-cromlech-boulders-llanberis

There are more higher up on the hill and you will find boulderars here at most times of the weather permits.
