Ty Crwn (The Roundhouse), Barmouth

Highlight • Historical Site

One of the most intriguing buildings in the historic seaside town of Barmouth has to be the Barmouth Round House, known locally as Ty Crwn.
It was originally built in 1833 as a prison for drunks, sluts and idlers who disturbed the peace of the harbour.
According to sources, it was built round so that the devil could not find a corner to hide in!
In addition to drunken sailors who caused trouble, there was apparently also a group of women who regularly caused offense.
Ty Crwn was then split into two halves so that police could lock up disorderly women and men separately. The two rooms were separated by a small curtain.
You can't enter the Roundhouse, but you can peek through the window and see what prison conditions were like in the 1830s.
