Rockcliffe Village

Highlight • Pub

Rockcliffe is a picturesque village situated on the Solway Firth at the confluence of the Eden and Esk rivers. The village takes its name from the Old Norse raudhr klimpel—"red cliff"—and offers a blend of nature, heritage, and tranquility. Along the Rockcliffe Marsh (SSSI status), you can spot migratory birds such as geese and waders and enjoy views over the estuary.

In the center stands St. Mary's Church, with a 10th-century Norse cross and a ship's weathervane as a reminder of its maritime past. Rockcliffe also has a village school, a cricket club, a community center, and the welcoming pub, The Crown and Thistle.

Rockcliffe is named for the small, sandstone cliffs that the Eden has forged over time here. It is a small village on the marshy peninsula between the Rivers Eden and Esk.

It is home to 'Global Warming', the final sculpture in the Eden Benchmark series, created by artist Anthony Turner. There are various interpretations of the piece. Whether it is a melting planet or simply the Earth held in the embrace of a cupped hand, it is for you to decide what you make of it.

The Eden Benchmarks are a series of 10 sculptures that stretch from the source of the River Eden, high in the Mallerstang Valley, to here at Rockcliffe, beyond where the Eden meets the Solway Firth.
