Schmidtheim Castle

Above the center of Schmidtheim lies the impressive, elegant castle complex. Today it is hardly noticeable that it was originally built as a moated castle. At 545 meters, it is the highest moated castle in the Rhineland.

Towards the end of the 12th century, the noble family of Smydeheim is mentioned in documents; they built the castle next to the parish church.

The family died out around 1500. The Beissel von Gymnich family followed, and the castle is still privately owned by the family today.

The current core of the castle complex was built in 1627. The moats of the former two-part moated castle were filled in after a fire in 1890.
