At some places along our route, you could get to the Semois, to Max's chagrin, he couldn't keep rolling in the water. Max=water rat.

Classified as "Principal Walloon Heritage"

The medieval ruins of the castle of Herbeumont are located on a rock ridge that dominates the village and the meanders of the Semois.

The castle was founded in 1268 by Jehan de Rochefort, son of the house of Walcourt. Other families that owned the castle over time: the house of Orgeo (1268-1420), the house of de la Marck-Rochefort (1420-1544), the house of Stolberg (1544-1574) and the house of Lowestein (1574-1796). The heavily vegetated steep slopes of the hill made the castle inaccessible from three sides for a long time.

The castle was rebuilt several times. The walls were strengthened during the 15th century and were flanked on the south side by a sturdy round tower at each end. The castle was destroyed by fire by the French troops of Marshal de la Ferté on the orders of Louis XIV on August 21, 1657.

Since 1993, the archaeological site has been included in the list of the Exceptional Heritage of Wallonia.

It's a typical rural building where people come to wash their clothes. It's part of the daily life of the farming community and holds an important place within the village. It was a meeting place for women.
The old washhouse had a rectangular floor plan, open on one side. It was built of slate under a slate roof, a typical material for this region. The gable roof is supported by two solid wooden pillars. The water troughs, which were also once made of wood, were replaced with stone elements during a restoration of the complex in 1903. Below these is a trough with sloping edges, fitted with a concrete kneeling plate to facilitate beating out the laundry. The sink, unfortunately, has disappeared. The water troughs at the entrance to the complex were used to water the livestock, but also to supply the other troughs used for washing and rinsing. The building, which had suffered severe damage over the years, has been completely restored: the roof has been replaced and the walls reinforced. The entire complex has been beautifully whitewashed, adding to its charm. (Cirkwi)
