Rügenhof Putgarten

Highlight • Settlement

An old restored manor in the middle of Putgarten directly on the path leading to Cape Arkona is an ideal place to immerse yourself in the history of traditional crafts and to experience this art up close. The red brick house ensemble consisting of a manor house, two long horse stables and a barn is typical of Northern Germany. In the center of the spacious courtyard, a pond, surrounded by willows, invites you to linger.

Putgarten Village

Highlight • Settlement

In the north of Rügen, the newly founded "Neuvorpommersch-Rügensche Verein zur Rettungsschiffbrüchiger" built its first rescue station in Putgarten in 1866 and then took over the existing Prussian stations in Glowe, Mukran and Göhren on Rügen as well as Kloster on Hiddensee and the one at Darßer Ort. The association joined the DGzRS in 1868. The old rescue shed in Putgarten still stands today at Dorfstraße 25a and serves as a vehicle hall for the Putgarten volunteer fire department.

Cape Arkona Lighthouse

Highlight • Monument

The path from the northern beach along the coast below the cape to the fishing village of Vitt is great and varied, especially for kids...and the smoked fish in Vitt is great. From there then above the cliffs to Cape Arkona and over the dirt roads back to the parking lot.

Jaromarsburg Slavic Fortress Ruins

Highlight • Historical Site

In addition to the two lighthouses and the direction-finding tower, Cape Arkona has another historically significant attraction to offer: the remains of the rampart that once surrounded the Jaromarsburg. It was once 13 meters high - other sources say 25 meters - and protected the castle to the west. The other three sides were surrounded by the sea. The Jaromarsburg was a temple fortress of the Ranen, a Slavic tribe, and was used to worship their main god Svantevit.
In 1168/69, the Danes under King Waldemar I conquered this sanctuary and subjugated the Ranen, who had lived here since the 6th century. This marked the beginning of the Christianization of Rügen. The island's first Christian church was built where the Ranen temple had previously stood in the middle of the mighty rampart.
Nothing remains of the church. Wind, weather and natural erosion have led to the collapse of the cliffs over the past centuries. Little by little it disappeared into the waters of the Baltic Sea. Only a small part of the former castle wall remains and the excavation site gives tourists visiting the cape today a small sense of the size of this once impressive castle complex.
Some of the finds from the excavations inside the former castle wall can be seen in the exhibition center in the Peilturm.

Peilturm at Cape Arkona

Highlight • Monument

The Jaromarsburg

In the middle of the castle stood the temple in 1168 with the oversized wooden image of the four-headed god Svantevit.

The remains of the Arkona Temple Castle are an important testimony to Slavic cultural history in the Baltic Sea region. Protected on three sides by the cliffs and on the land side by a 25 meter high rampart, it was a place of worship for the natives of Rügen from the 6th to the 12th century - the Slavic Ranen. With the conquest and destruction of the sanctuary under the leadership of Bishop Absalon of Roskilde in 1168, the Christianization of the islanders was initiated. The Danish historian Saxo Grammaticus was an eyewitness to this decisive event. Only the descriptions in the 14th book of his "Historia Danica" have handed down details of how the Ranenburg looked before it was destroyed.

Natural erosion at the cape over the centuries has caused much of the inner castle to collapse into the Baltic Sea and have been swallowed up by the sea. For the excavation team and its leader Fred Ruchthöft, it is a race against time to secure the archaeological finds. For example, the archaeologists literally brought to light a spearhead, arrowheads, pearls and a spur. Imposing cultural-historical individual pieces from the archaeological excavations from inside the ramparts are exhibited in the observation tower.

Smoked Fish at Vitt Harbor

Highlight • Restaurant

Today there is only 1 fishing family left in Vitt who catch their fish themselves, smoke them at the harbor and offer them to visitors. With the best weather and a delicious smell of smoke at the harbor, with a view over the blue sea to the nearby Cape Arkona, every fish sandwich tastes like a revelation.

Vitt fishing village

Highlight • Settlement

The idyllic and somewhat remote fishing village invites you to stop off in the warm months with many small cafés. From the beach you already have a great view of the cliffs.
