Heathland pond at Mantingerzand

Highlight • Lake

The Mantingerzand is a vast nature reserve between the villages of Mantinge and Nieuw-Balinge. This area, better known as the Mantingerveld, consists largely of heathland, fens, forests, and some small drifting sands. Former agricultural lands are also part of the Natura 2000 area. These lands have been developed by the owner, Natuurmonumenten, for nature development. The main goal of these interventions was to connect isolated heathlands into one large nature reserve. Heathlands such as the Hullenzand, the Balingerzand and Mantingerzand, Martensplek, and the Lentsche Veen. These nature reserves were valuable remnants of a vast heathland between Hoogeveen and Westerbork, which was increasingly reclaimed over the course of the 20th century. Each of the four areas individually still possessed high natural quality, but were under considerable pressure due to their small size. A striking feature of the Natura 2000 area is the extensive and magnificent juniper thickets, which are among the most beautiful thickets in the Netherlands. The dry and wet heathlands, fens, and drifting sands also demonstrate the area's great diversity. Several old deciduous forests and a number of reclaimed forests are also part of the Natura 2000 area.

Mantingerzand Nature Reserve

Highlight • Natural

The Mantingerzand is located northeast of Hoogeveen and was created by the cutting of heathland sods and the presence of sheep in the area. It is without doubt one of the most beautiful shifting sand areas in the Netherlands.

The characteristic pine trees of the Mantingerzand are striking conifers that thrive in the area's dry, sandy soil. They give the landscape its distinctive character, often in combination with heathlands and open sandy plains. These pines contribute to biodiversity, provide shelter and nesting sites for birds and other animals, and enhance the natural character of the Mantingerzand.

Ancient Oaks at Mantingerzand

Highlight • Natural Monument

Ancient oaks are very old, often hundreds of years old, oak trees that play a vital role in the ecosystem. They provide a habitat for numerous plants, birds, insects, and fungi. Once again in the Mantingerzand, a large nature reserve in beautiful Drenthe. Nice round, over the damp heath and past the juniper berries...
And then we were lucky that not a drop of rain fell while walking...😀😀

Nice walk on the Mantingerzand. The Mantingerzand area is very old (dating from the Middle Ages) and arose because humans had influence on the area. Because the area with sand drifts became larger and larger, oak and pine trees were planted at the end of the nineteenth century. The juniper has also been planted, which grows especially well on drifting …

This area is always beautiful. And in my opinion with one of the most beautiful trees in Drenthe.

With some tension I leave my bike behind at the restaurant. Although secured with 2 locks🫣 I pick up the route, which I got from komoot a few meters from the restaurant "bij Oons".
A 10 for this route. I enjoyed every meter. Sometimes it was a bit heavy through the sand but that did not spoil the fun. Mantingerzand …

Beautiful walking area, always good for a round of pure nature...😄

We walked the white route over the Mantingerzand and wow, what a beautiful piece of nature in the Netherlands! Vast heathland, sand drifts, fens and winding paths between the juniper bushes. And that spring sun with it... what a delight! ☀️

You walk partly along the road to Balinge. A boring straight stretch. We walked past the Balinge ice rink because the original route here was practically impassable due to the high water level.

Very nice walk through a very diverse area!!
