Bellefontaine Abbey is a Cistercian monastery founded in 1120. You can admire the ancient architecture and the statue of the Virgin Mary donated by Pope Clement V. You can also explore the surrounding countryside, where you will find orchards, farms and woods. The abbey has a guest house where you can stay for a few days and join the monks in their prayer and work. You can also buy some of their products, such as honey, cheese and books3. The legend: a shepherd notices that one of his oxen habitually licks a large stone in his field. Refusing to graze on the grass, the animal is nevertheless the fattest in the herd... Beneath the large stone, a statue of St Tibère, a young martyr who died at 14 at the beginning of the 4th century, is discovered. The statue is taken to the church of May sur Evre, but the next day it returns to its original spot, and the same happens a second time... This is the legend that explains the current location of the St Tibère chapel, a few leagues from the Belle Fontaine abbey in Mauges.
