Description
If you're looking for a challenging but incredibly rewarding trail running experience in the Pacific Northwest, the Lake 22 loop from Lake Twenty Two Trailhead is definitely worth your time. This difficult 5.0-mile (8.1 km) jogging route packs in 1347 feet (411 metres) of elevation gain, which you can conquer in about 1 hour and 13 minutes if you push it. It's a fantastic choice for experienced trail runners who appreciate a diverse landscape and don't mind technical sections.
What to expect on Lake 22 loop from Lake Twenty Two Trailhead
The journey begins on a well-maintained path, but don't let that fool you; the trail quickly transitions into a lush mountain rainforest environment, complete with towering old-growth western hemlock and red cedar trees. You'll navigate rocky sections, exposed roots, and even a significant talus slope with multiple switchbacks, making sustained jogging a real test. Throughout the ascent, the sound of Twenty-Two Creek and numerous waterfalls will accompany you, leading to the ultimate reward: the pristine Lake 22 itself, a glacially carved alpine lake framed by impressive cliffs and often reflecting Mount Pilchuck. Expect a continuous climb, making this route better suited for those who are comfortable interspersing jogging with power hiking on steeper, more technical terrain.
Planning your visit
Located just over an hour from Seattle, the Lake 22 loop is a popular and easily accessible day hike, but be warned: the Lake Twenty Two Trailhead parking can fill up quickly, especially on weekends, so an early start is highly recommended. The trail can be used year-round, but exercise extreme caution in winter and spring, as the boulder field around the lake is prone to avalanches and rockfall. Always check current trail conditions before heading out, and be prepared for potentially muddy sections, particularly in spring.
