Old town around Ettlingen Castle

Highlight • Historical Site

Ettlingen Castle is a baroque castle in the center of the Baden-Württemberg town of Ettlingen.
Today's castle had two, possibly three, previous buildings. After the Baden Margrave Hermann V was enfeoffed by Emperor Friedrich II with the town of Ettlingen, which was founded by the Hohenstaufens, his son Margrave Rudolf I of Baden built a castle complex in the middle of the 13th century - possibly on the remains of a previous Hohenstaufen building; However, a previous building has not yet been proven. The lower floors of the keep in the castle courtyard, which are still preserved today, date from this time.

A magnificent Renaissance castle followed in the 16th century. Two round corner towers were added to the south wing, and the keep was given a half-timbered upper floor. The three-wing Renaissance complex around the old keep, completed in 1600, was destroyed along with the entire city by French troops in the War of the Palatinate Succession in 1689.

Ettlingen Town Hall

Highlight • Monument

The town hall tower next to the newly renovated old town hall on the market square. It features an interesting war memorial from both World Wars and a Roman Neptune stone on the Alb side.

About the town hall:
After Ettlingen's complete destruction by the French in the War of the Palatinate Succession in 1689, the town hall was completed in 1738. Built in the Baroque style from red sandstone typical of the region, the building is one of the city center's most striking architectural landmarks. Along the central axis, from bottom to top, are the Ettlingen coat of arms on the balcony, the Baden coat of arms, the St. George sculpture, and the figure of Justitia on the gable crown.

Lower Glasbach Hut and Water Wheel

Highlight • Mountain Hut

The Glasbachhütte is a nice barbecue hut in the middle of the forest for about 25-30 people. A small stream with water wheel runs in the middle. Separate, huge barbecue on the right side. There is room for about 10-15 people in the hut. The reservation rings over the town hall in Waldprechtsweier. From Sulzbach or Malsch with a brisk march (about 30-45 minutes) with children easily accessible.
