Vatevijver Pond

Highlight • Lake

The Vatevijver is a pond in the Belgian town of Lo. The pond is located southwest of the town hall and the market.
A vat was constructed to collect rainwater, usually in the immediate vicinity of the church. This was crucial in the construction of a polder village, an environment where there is a lot of brackish, unusable water. The vate was at the same time a drinking water well, watering place, water supply for washing and fire-fighting water supply. The Vatevijver was first mentioned in 1404.
In the past, women would go to the Vate pond to bleach their laundry. It was forbidden to wash wool or pour soapy water or other dirt into it. It was the inspectors who were responsible for the cleanliness of the vate water.

Knokkebrug Drawbridge

Highlight • Bridge

The Knokkebrug is located on the border of Diksmuide with Lo-Reninge and Houthulst, although the coat of arms of the latter municipality hangs on the railing. It owes its name to the Fort Knocke that the Spaniards built there in 1590 and that was once of great military importance. Today there is a cone-shaped shelter, a rest and information point for cyclists. The drawbridge is located at the confluence of the Yser with the Ieperlee Canal.

Handzamevaart Gravel Route East of Esen

Highlight (Segment) • Trail

Beautiful gravel connection from Esen to a handy canal. If you come from Esen better drive further north to avoid mud along Handzamevaart. The eye-catcher here is certainly the Handzamevaart.

Atheneum Path

Highlight • Bridge

This path includes the beautiful "Driemussenbrug", a bridge over the Yser in Diksmuide. The bridge is named after the three sparrows that were on the bridge when it was built. The bridge is an important connection between the center of Diksmuide and the sub-municipality of Kaaskerke.

Diksmuide Market Square

Highlight • Historical Site

The market of Diksmuide is a lively and historic place in the center of the city. On the Grote Markt in Diksmuide, merchants have been offering their merchandise at the weekly Monday market since the thirteenth century. Now there is also the farmer's market on Saturday afternoon, where local producers sell their delicious farm products in an atmospheric market.
Diksmuide is also known as the Butter City. The Boterhalle and the Boter- en Kaasfeesten on Whit Monday bear witness to this. The statue 'Het Manneke uit de Mane' is the symbol of Flemish humor that is guarded by the 'Orde van het Manneke', while the statue of General-Baron Jacques reminds us of the Battle of Diksmuide in 1914.
The center of Diksmuide received a thorough facelift. The aim of the project was to make the center of Diksmuide more attractive. The Grote Markt is now a pleasant square. The trees, benches and water elements make it really cozy.

In the IJzer Tower you will find the Museum on the IJzer. It tells the story of the Belgian-German front during World War I through the stories of soldiers, refugees and civilians on both sides of the front.

From the top of the 84 meter high tower you have a wonderful panoramic view over Diksmuide and the Westhoek.
