St. Goar - In steter Gefahr

Quelle: Text Infotafel

View of Katz Castle

Highlight • Viewpoint

The ongoing conflict between the Electors of Trier and the Counts of Katzenelnbogen can be seen in the Bug “Katz”, which can only be viewed from the outside, as well as in its counterpart, the “Maus” Castle. The castle in St. Goarshausen, which was actually built in 1371 as Neu-Katzenelnbogen Castle, was given the popular name “Katz”. The Counts of Katzenelnbogen wanted to use it to protect their possessions on the Rhine and in particular the customs office in St. Goar opposite - as well as consciously setting a counterweight to the “Maus” castle in Electorate, which threatened their customs clearance.

Rheinfels Castle

Highlight • Castle

Rheinfels Castle is the largest surviving castle ruin on the Rhine. Although time has left its mark on the walls, you can still imagine what the magnificent fortress must have looked like.

Part of the castle is now a museum where you can learn about the interesting history of the place. You can find information about the opening times here: stadt-st-goar.de/urlaub-in-st-goar/#rheinfels.

Beautiful, varied tour. Lonely paths, great views and great rest and sleeping options for bikers and hikers. We parked our camper right on the Rhine at a beautiful campsite and enjoyed being outside😀..

Today in Sank Geweer (like mer Hunsrigga saan) on the way. I parked in the parking lot (with parking ticket) of Rheinfels Castle and then first looked for the entrance to the tour 🤷🏻‍♀️. After going back and forth a few times, I found it. Then the path was unfortunately closed after a few hundred meters due to logging work …

On the way back from Koblenz I decided at short notice to drive through the Rhine Valley. I stopped in St. Goar to walk the panoramic path there. It was a great decision - the views were fantastic. The highlight was the view of the Loreley. Down on the banks of the Rhine I watched three ships meet at the …

This varied and scenic loop truly lives up to its name. From the Rhine riverbank in Sankt Goar, the trail ascends to Rheinfels Castle and then continues – parallel to the Rhine – along the Rhine slope and across the high plateau to the Lorelei viewpoint. After descending through the forest, the path leads back along the Rhine riverbank to …

I had been planning this tour for ages, originally as "Panoramic Trail". On the way, I saw many (relatively new) signs with "Panoramaweg". In fact, this circular route is now signposted as one of the Rheinfelsschleifen and would have continued from the ferry dock on the bank to the harbor and then up over the youth hostel to Rheinfels Castle. …

It's worth starting the tour with an espresso at the Eiscafé Point. They serve a cute little ice cream cone with your coffee. A wonderful idea from the friendly café owner. The very friendly bakery across the street happily makes fresh sandwiches. This way, we also had some delicious provisions.
