Argenschwang Castle Ruins

Highlight • Castle

The count seat from the 14th century originally belonged to the lords of Sponheim. The hilltop castle later experienced an eventful history and was finally destroyed in 1793 by the French. Remains of the western side still tower above the town today, giving an idea of the old size of the complex.

Argenschwang Protestant Church

Highlight • Religious Site

Argenschwang is located in southern Hunsrück, at the foot of the Geisberg. The tiny town, first mentioned in 1127, has only a few inhabitants. But for many centuries the castle above the village was an important hub of the area.

The village also benefited from this. You can still see the former synagogue and several old houses from the 18th century. And of course the church. The neo-Gothic quarry stone building was completed in 1883 and is well worth a visit. Despite the renovations that have taken place in the meantime, the interior and exterior of the church have been largely preserved and can therefore be viewed in their original state today.

Former Jewish synagogue

Highlight • Religious Site

The former Jewish synagogue in Argenschwang was probably built around 1650.

The two-story half-timbered house with rectangular windows was bought by the Jewish community in the 18th century in order to set up a synagogue after the building was expanded. The prayer room was on the upper floor. The women's area was separated by a privacy screen. The prayer room had a vaulted wooden ceiling that was painted with a starry sky.

The interior was probably devastated and damaged during the November pogrom in 1938. In August 1939, a farmer bought the building, which in 1950 was returned to the Jewish community of Bad Kreuznach / Birkenfeld, which later sold it.

In 1980 the outside of the building was repaired. The current owner has renovated the building in an exemplary manner in recent years.

Today we went into the dreaded summer slump ;-)..The paths led through vineyards, wonderful views, the wine village of Wallhausen and finally to Gebroth to the Merg juice press. There is a beautiful farm shop where you can buy sparkling wine, lots of different juices and jams... Another highlight is this bike tour in the beautiful Soonwald
