Bismarck Museum, Friedrichsruh

Highlight • Historical Site

He would "declare anyone his mortal enemy" who built a museum for him,
Otto von Bismarck told a confidant in 1889, just a few months before his dismissal from his position as Chancellor and Minister of Foreign Affairs.

But as early as September 1891, a museum was opened in his Altmark birthplace of Schönhausen
on the Elbe.

Of course, people in Friedrichsruh and the surrounding area had also wanted to profit early on from the widespread veneration of the first Chancellor among the national bourgeoisie. These efforts culminated in 1901 with the establishment of the first "museum" in the Bismarck Tower in neighboring Aumühle, whose presentation, admittedly, could hardly be called museum-worthy and consequently had to close its doors 20 years after its opening. As early as 1927, memorabilia, pictures, and paintings from the Schönhausen family estate were brought from the museum there to the "Alter Forsthof" villa in Aumühle and made accessible to the public. In April 1933, this collection was moved to the Friedrichsruh stables, where it remained until the end of the war in 1945, when the family had to use the rooms temporarily as accommodation due to the destruction of the central residential building. The collection remained in storage until, on December 4, 1950, it finally found its current home in the "Landhaus Friedrichsruh" opposite, a former inn.

Bismarck himself had purchased the building in 1871 and, after a fire in 1888, had it rebuilt the following year. Hamburg art historian Carl Schellenberg, who was involved in its construction, described the newly opened museum as a "mirror of an era" in which "not only the historically interesting and artistically successful" attracts, but rather the "remarkable charm of the little things that an important person had around him" touches. This is perhaps what makes the museum so special today. Around 350 original objects and several reproductions are on display in ten rooms and Bismarck's recreated study: historical memorabilia and personal items, depictions of significant events and people, symbols of honor and veneration, important documents, and much more.

Alte Schulstraße, Aumühle

Highlight • Cycleway

Smooth and easy-to-drive route between Königsallee and Aumühle. In the direction of Aumühle you can quickly roar downhill here. The free car park is a good starting point for tours into the beautiful surrounding nature.

Attention: From time to time a mobile speed camera is set up in front of the parking lot.

Königsallee, Sachsenwald

Highlight (Segment) • Trail

Königsallee sounds so pompous, but it's not. Anyone who thinks of the KÖ in Düsseldorf is completely wrong.😂
The Königsallee is a "sand road" that leads dead straight through the Sachsenwald. It is closed to cars, but free for the few residents, bicycles and, of course, hikers. It's a bit bumpy in some places, but it's good for biking.

The tunnel used to be flooded when it rained, but is now easily passable again.
The railway line "cuts through" the Sachsenwald and practically divides it into two parts.
The tunnel offers the only official opportunity to cross under the railway line for miles around. The next opportunities to do so will be to the east in
Schwarzenbek and to the west in Friedrichsruh.

I think it's a shame when highlights are posted without a photo or commentary.

I've now done that for the "highlight creator," Niv.

Bridge for the train or tunnel for the bikes...that is the question.

I'm leaning toward the tunnel, because we're not traveling by train, but by bike. 😉
I posted the "Tunnel" cycling highlight here before, too.

Unfortunately, Komoot didn't find it worthy enough and deleted it from the map.

But now someone else has reposted it.

Let's see how long it stays here.

Andreas-Bank in the Sachsenwald

Highlight • Rest Area

In the middle of the Saxon Forest, the Andreas Bank stands on the edge of the path and invites you to take a break.

This bridge offers a good opportunity to cross the A24 between the Sachsenwald and the Bille.

Alte Waldstraße

Highlight • Trail

Pros: Direct connection through the Sachsenwald forest between Grande and Aumühle, often on solid sandy forest paths. Cons: A long stretch of cobblestones near the underpass under Kreisstraße, with occasional thicker stones along the path and remnants of tree felling.
