Prat Barrina Paleontological Site (Fossil Footprints)

Highlight • Natural Monument

Paleontological site of Prat Barrina. The footprints or ichnites correspond to the geological epoch of the Oligocene, between 34 and 23 million years ago, and were most likely made by the species Entelodon magnum: an ancestor or relative of the current wild boars. 30 million years ago the land where the Serra de Castelltallat is now was a flat area with more or less ephemeral lakes and hills. The place where the can Prat Barrina farmhouse is now was a regular place of passage for herds of animals that went to water at these lakes, and it seems that the ones that most stepped on these marshy lands were of the Entelodon magnum species . These mammals of considerable weight left their footprints on the wet mud which, many years later, would end up transforming into limestone rock.
