If you're looking for a serious challenge on your feet, the Berlin Municipal Forest loop from Berlin Pond is one of those jogging trails that truly delivers. This difficult 12.1-mile (19.4 km) route packs in 626 feet (191 metres) of climbing, taking around 2 hours and 2 minutes to complete. It's a demanding run best suited for experienced joggers with very good fitness who appreciate varied terrain and significant natural beauty.
What to expect on Berlin Municipal Forest loop from Berlin Pond
Expect a journey through diverse landscapes, starting with a mix of dirt roads and some paved surfaces around Berlin Pond. The first half of the loop is notably hilly, offering a good workout, while the second half flattens out, allowing for a steadier pace. As you move through the Berlin Municipal Forest, you'll encounter woodland paths and conserved forests, especially around Irish Hill. The scenery includes picturesque views of Berlin Pond itself, along with an oasis of cedar forests, wetlands, beaver meadows, and at least six large woodland vernal pools. This area is also an Important Bird Area, so keep an eye out for species like the Common Loon. This route demands good fitness, but rewards you with a rich natural experience.
Planning your visit
Access to the area is generally straightforward, with Brookfield Road on the western side of the pond transitioning into a more rugged Class 4 road or even a trail further south. While some sections might be suitable for easier runs, the full municipal forest loop is more demanding. Note that some designated trails are also open to wheeled vehicles like mountain bikes during certain months, specifically from May 15 to November 1. Given its ecological significance as a vital water source, please respect the protected natural environment. Arriving early in the day is often best to enjoy the quiet and potential bird activity.
