Description
If you're looking for a high-reward hike with minimal effort on Oahu, the Lanikai Pillbox No. 2 Viewpoint – Lanikai Pillbox 1 loop from Lanikai is an excellent choice. This easy 1.6-mile (2.5 km) hiking route, with 441 feet (134 metres) of elevation gain, can be completed in about 52 minutes, offering some of the island's most iconic panoramic views for a relatively short time commitment. It's perfect for anyone wanting stunning vistas without a full day's trek.
What to expect on Lanikai Pillbox No. 2 Viewpoint – Lanikai Pillbox 1 loop from Lanikai
The trail begins with a notably steep incline, which is often considered the most challenging part of the entire route. You'll navigate loose dirt and rocks here, so watch your footing, especially if it's been raining. As you climb, the path remains unpaved and uneven, with roots and bushes to contend with, but the effort is quickly rewarded. Once you reach the historic concrete pillboxes, you'll be treated to breathtaking panoramic views of Lanikai Beach, its turquoise waters, and the distinct Mokulua Islands. The section connecting the first and second pillboxes is much gentler, making for an easier stroll between these incredible viewpoints. Be prepared for full sun exposure throughout, as there's very little shade.
Planning your visit
This trail is incredibly popular, especially around sunrise, so arriving early is always a good idea to secure parking and avoid the biggest crowds. The trailhead is easily accessible from Lanikai, but parking can be tight in the residential area. Given the constant sun exposure and the initial steep climb, make sure to bring plenty of water, even for such a short hike. Proper footwear with good grip is highly recommended due to the varied and often slippery terrain.
