The Natchaug State Forest – West Thompson Dam loop from Quaddick State Forest is one of those mountain biking routes that truly tests your limits: a difficult 64.0-mile (102.9 km) ride with 3339 feet (1018 metres) of elevation gain, taking around 7 hours and 5 minutes. This full-day adventure is best suited for experienced mountain bikers with very good fitness and advanced riding skills looking for a serious challenge in Northeastern Connecticut.

What to expect on Natchaug State Forest – West Thompson Dam loop from Quaddick State Forest

This extensive mountain biking route takes you through vibrant, dense woodlands and rolling hills, offering picturesque views, particularly along the Natchaug River. You'll encounter a varied terrain, from flat sections to demanding areas with uneven ground, small hills, steep climbs, rocks, and roots. From the West Thompson Dam, you can enjoy panoramic vistas of the surrounding area, but be prepared for a technical rocky section specifically noted on the east side of West Thompson Lake. Expect to push your bike in some parts due to the technical sections and significant elevation changes, making this route ideal for riders who enjoy "fun old school mountain bike trails" and aren't afraid of a demanding, full-day commitment.
