Schandtauber Stream

Highlight • River

The Schandtauber is a 13.8 km long tributary of the Tauber. It rises south of Gammesfeld on the Hohenloher Plain and winds its way as a trickle to Bettenfeld in Bavaria. There, water emerges from a karst spring from an underground cave system and the Schandtauber supplies most of the water. Now the river flows through the untouched Schandtauber Valley, past several mills, before flowing into the Tauber at the Schmelzmühle below Rothenburg.

The Plönlein is probably Rothenburg's best-known motif. Plönlein does not refer to a single object, but the entire area with the half-timbered houses, the Plönlein fountain, the Siebersturm and the Kobolzeller Tor.

From the castle garden you can look out over the Tauber valley in three directions. To the north you can see Detwang, the Fuchsmühle and the Topplerschlösschen, to the south you can see the double bridge and the hospital district, the so-called “Kappenzipfel” and to the west you can see the Engelsburg and the former ski jump.

Rothenburg ob der Tauber Market Square

Highlight • Historical Site

Rothenburg ob der Tauber is world-renowned for its historic old town, so well and completely preserved that one can truly experience the Middle Ages there. The market square forms the heart of the town. From here, one can admire the impressive facades of the surrounding houses. In winter, one of Germany's most famous and oldest Christmas markets takes place here and in the surrounding alleyways: the Rothenburg Reiterlesmarkt.

Markus Tower & Röder Arch

Highlight • Monument

The Markus Tower and the Röderbogen are part of the oldest city wall around Rothenburg, which was built before the first extension to today's Rödertor. If you visit Rothenburg in spring, listen and take a good look to see whether the storks have already arrived in the nest on the Markus Tower.

The stone mill is the oldest of the Rothenburg Tauber mills and was one of the most important. Grain was milled here until 1980.

This bridge is the so-called wobbly bridge. From here you can take the steep Eselssteige path to the Burggarten and further into the old town.

April 28, 2025,Rothenburg ob der Tauber
Today we headed to the lovely Tauber Valley and beautiful Rothenburg.

Half-timbered houses, narrow alleys, intact towers, a walkable city wall... Rothenburg ob der Tauber is full of medieval atmosphere and is highly recommended.

If you get there early enough during the week, you'll be largely spared from the tourist crowds... 😉
