A new river and bank landscape was created parallel to the Neckar on an area of around 17 hectares, offering a new habitat for many endangered animal and plant species. The heart of the Zugwiesen is a creek that is about 1.7 kilometers long and three to five meters wide, the so-called bypass channel. This has been connecting the Neckar above and below the Poppenweiler barrage since February 2nd, 2012. Some side waters open to the Neckar with islands and flat shore zones were created, as well as shallow ponds for amphibians and flower meadows with fruit trees to separate them from the agricultural areas. Later, nesting opportunities for the kingfisher were installed at a suitable place in the area.
