Lanchester Valley Path

Highlight • Trail

Stretching for 20 miles (32 km) through the countryside, Lanchester Valley Path is perfect for cycling and hiking. The path follows the old Lanchester Valley railway line which ran from 1862 until 1965. Trains once carried iron to Consett steelworks and coal from Langley Park along this route.

You should be able to spot old station houses, platforms and historical ruins en route. There's also plenty of benches and picnic areas.

Knitsley Farm Shop & Cafe

Highlight • Cafe

As far as farm shops go, this has the option of a sit-in cafe with a great choice of food or alternitavley, the Deli has a choice of freshly made sanwiches, pastries and beverages to take out. One of my favourite refuling points on this route.

Lanchester Valley Way

Highlight • Trail

A great route but can be busy with dog walkers throughout, so be aware.
Lanchester and Knitsley farm provide opportunities to take in refreshments, likewise, when you get there Parkhead Station also offers similar.
If you have arrived at Parkhead Station from Lanchester, then the good news is that it's mostly downhill back to Lanchester, which is a real bonus, especially if the wind is against you on the Waskerly Way. Enjoy........👍

River Browney

Highlight • Forest

The River Browney flows through County Durham through moorland, forests, disused coal mines, and remnants of a bygone industrial era. Decades of lead and coal mining badly affected the river's biodiversity. However, since the closure of the mines, the river has bounced back and you may even spot otters here today.
