Schlabbegass and Badischer Hof

Highlight • Historical Site

"with d'Schlabbe, in d'Schlabbe, to Schlabbe"
The historic building of the Badischer Hof was built in 1698 and used to be the official building, the office and residence of the noble magistrate in Ettlingen. The historic figure of the Madonna on the corner of the building is intended to serve as a protective figure. Finally, in 1784, the official building became the Badischer Hof. This was once popularly called “the Schlabbe” because it was possible to drink a glass of beer or wine in slippers. The house was completely renovated in 2019 and now shines in full splendor again.

Old town around Ettlingen Castle

Highlight • Historical Site

Ettlingen Castle is a baroque castle in the center of the Baden-Württemberg town of Ettlingen.
Today's castle had two, possibly three, previous buildings. After the Baden Margrave Hermann V was enfeoffed by Emperor Friedrich II with the town of Ettlingen, which was founded by the Hohenstaufens, his son Margrave Rudolf I of Baden built a castle complex in the middle of the 13th century - possibly on the remains of a previous Hohenstaufen building; However, a previous building has not yet been proven. The lower floors of the keep in the castle courtyard, which are still preserved today, date from this time.

A magnificent Renaissance castle followed in the 16th century. Two round corner towers were added to the south wing, and the keep was given a half-timbered upper floor. The three-wing Renaissance complex around the old keep, completed in 1600, was destroyed along with the entire city by French troops in the War of the Palatinate Succession in 1689.

Ettlingen Palace

Highlight • Castle

Ettlingen Castle is the vibrant, cultural, and social center of the town. In summer, the Castle Festival attracts thousands of visitors to the theater and musicals in the castle courtyard. The castle's most beautiful hall is the Asam Hall, which, thanks to its excellent acoustics, has become one of the region's most popular concert halls.

Throughout the year, the Ettlingen Museum presents stimulating interactive exhibitions on regional art and cultural history, as well as urban archaeology. An extensive program of expert guided tours guarantees an eventful stay with explorations through the historic old town, the castle, and the museums.

Ettlingen Castle dates back to a medieval castle, which was converted into a prestigious Renaissance complex in the 16th century. The castle acquired its Baroque appearance under the reign of Margravine Sybilla Augusta of Baden, who moved her retirement home to Ettlingen in 1727. The impressive paintings in the castle chapel (now the Asam Hall) were created by the famous fresco painter Cosmas Damian Asam.
