Flood Retention Basin in Allgäu

Highlight • Structure

The Urlau flood retention basin near Leutkirch in the Allgäu region protects the region from flooding, particularly along the Eschach and Aitrach rivers, as well as in the Taufach-Fetzach-Moos moorland. It can hold up to one million cubic meters of water and is flooded during heavy rainfall to absorb peak flood waters. The Urlau depot monitors and maintains the facility. In June 2024, the basin was completely filled after persistent rain; the rapid deployment of the Federal Agency for Technical Relief (THW) and the fire service prevented an imminent dam failure.

Very nice to walk paths, fauna and flora 👌. With a bit of luck you will see a shy cross viper. 🐍

Beautiful moor landscape. The path between the two lakes is partly on wooden walkways so that you don't get your feet wet. However, since there are not boardwalks everywhere and the hiking trails are sometimes wet, it is still advisable to put on sturdy shoes so as not to get your feet wet.

If moors and swamps interest you, you can see frogs, leeches and snakes here. You can also find the native sundew here if you take a closer look :)

Very interesting moorland landscape with some highlights.
In winter, some sections are barely or not at all accessible because they are flooded and icy. The ice is not strong enough and you can end up standing in water up to your knees. It is better to turn back.
