Wayside Cross of Gohrer Hof

Highlight • Monument

The then-chairman of the Council of the Evangelical Church in Germany, Wolfgang Huber (together with Cardinal Karl Lehmann, chairman of the German Bishops' Conference), wrote the following in an ecumenical book project on the 'Good News' (the translation of the word 'Gospel') according to the Gospel of John, regarding the crucifixion of Christ:

+ “This new connection… under the cross and through this death therefore already points beyond the mood of Good Friday. In this farewell, the seed of a new beginning already appears. THE CROSS ILLUMINS A HOPE that does not separate people from one another, but unites them. The cross, whose ends point in four different directions, has a common center. It unites.”

(Text from “In the Beginning a Word: The Gospel of John as a Yearly Companion”)

Wasserburg Anstel

Highlight • Castle

In 1155 the castle was first mentioned in a document by a "Sigefridus de Anstele". In the middle of the 12th century, a family named "de Anstele" was named as the owner of the castle. From 1209 they called themselves "Knights of Anstel" and after 1270 only "Knappen".
In 1371 the Archbishop of Cologne enfeoffed the squire of Anstel, Heinrich mit dem Barte, with the castle, who later called himself "von Anstel".
Around 1400 the castle was bought by Heinrich von Siegenhofen, whose family owned the castle until the male line died out and whose descendants sold it to Theodor Jochemich around 1911 and has remained in the possession of the Jochemich family to this day, who converted it into a baroque residential complex in 1722 unchanged building stock.

Liedberg Mill Tower

Highlight • Monument

History

The seven-story tower on the eastern summit of the Liedberg was a keep of the fortress (castle) of Liedberg. There is no scientific dating of its age. According to Jakob Bremer, it could have been built around the year 900 after the Norman raids. The residential tower, built from fired bricks and ashlar sandstone, lost importance after the construction of Liedberg Castle.

In 1572 it was converted into a windmill by adding a wooden gallery and a wing hood to the tower. In the wars of 1664 and 1706 the gallery was destroyed and rebuilt in stone. In 1776 the rent collector of Liedberg Castle tried unsuccessfully to auction the mill because it was not profitable. The French declared the mill a domain in 1794. The unprofitable mill remained in operation until 1836. A storm in 1836 tore down parts of the roof structure, the wings with the axle and the pinion wheel, ending its use as a mill.
