Chapel of the Souls of Santa Catarina

Highlight • Religious Site

Cape of Souls
Address: Rua de Santa Catarina 428, 4000-444, Porto
How to get:
Metro: Bolhão station (line D)
We found the Capela das Almas (Chapel of Souls) walking around the Mercado do Bolhao, very close to the busy Rua Santa Catarina. It is one of the most special churches in Porto, unmistakable for its striking white and blue tile façade and often forgotten on the most touristic routes. The Capela das Almas was built during the 18th century and is neoclassical in style.
However, the tile decoration so characteristic of this church, although it was done in the typical style of the 18th century (the period of maximum splendor of the Portuguese tile), was incorporated later, at the beginning of the 20th century, specifically in 1929.

Praça da Sé ⛪ Porto Cathedral

Highlight • Religious Site

Standing imposingly atop a hill, Porto Cathedral rises amidst narrow streets, guarding the old city. It is the oldest church in Porto and one of its most iconic monuments. Construction began in the 12th century and carries nearly a thousand years of history within its stonework.

From here, the view is breathtaking: red-tiled roofs, towers punctuating the sky, and the Douro River shaping the horizon. In front of the cathedral, an old pillory recalls dark times. During the dictatorship, it served as a symbol of intimidation.

The Douro River is crossed by several bridges as it passes through Porto. The most famous of these is the Dom Luis I Bridge (Ponte Dom Luís I in Portuguese), which connects the city to Vila Nova de Gaia. Opened at the end of the 19th century, this iron bridge is one of the most emblematic images of Porto.

Today I explored Porto again, this time without a particular plan. Of course, this break from pilgrimage did me some good: a morning stroll through Porto and a relaxing afternoon in the hostel garden. However, I'm glad to be back on the Camino de Santiago tomorrow. I expect the route between Porto and Santiago will be a bit busier than …

Almost rested and well strengthened, today we went to tourist sightseeing. Mega city with a lot of traffic. Everything criss-cross. Parking somehow. BUT so beautifully historically "old" The many winding streets are awesome. There is something to see and discover everywhere. Our goal was the cathedral, which we found after a bit of snooping around. Picked up the first stamp …

We explored Porto's city center today in brilliant sunshine. The streets were quite busy in places. There were a few major construction sites, such as the one at the train station. The half rabbit at Bordalo II is highly recommended.

Departure from the beautiful station with its famous wall tiles.

Food and drink establishments throughout the center.

Enjoy the photos and let yourself be guided through the city. There are many sights, I think there are many more than I have done now. This beautiful city has a lot to offer.

Enjoyed 🥰

The second day in Porto begins with breakfast in the Bolhāo market hall. The range of goods and the hustle and bustle is quite remarkable. On the way to the Igreja Santo Ildefonso, a few street musicians line the path, which is also a nice experience. The beautiful Igreja Ildefonso impresses with more than 11,000 tiles that cover the entire …
