Green Swamp - West Tract offers awesome gravel riding.

Highlight • Trail

The Green Swamp name implies that his area is mostly swamp. However, it contains over 60 miles of lime rock and sand logging roads. It is located on the edge of the Withlacoochee River and the Florida Trail west route runs thru here. The shaded rides through oak hammocks and pine trees are my favorites. The location is on the Lake Wales Ridge which features ancient sand dunes and sea beds. Consequently, there are patches of sugar-like beach sand. Gravel bikes can handle most of it, but mountain bikes with knobby tires can handle more.

Green Swamp Wilderness Preserve covers over 110,000 acres across four counties. It also borders the Withlacoochee State Forest and Colt Creek State Park, to make a very large continuous protected area.

Within this massive protected area, you'll find miles of trails and back roads to explore. There are multiple campgrounds, rivers, and lakes to explore. In short, it's an outdoors person's dream.

This small shop has the honor of being Florida's oldest General Store. Of course you'll find all of the essentials you may need for your ride (i.e. snacks and water) but you'll also find a number of historic pieces, homemade jams and marmalades, souvenirs, ice cream, and an entire wall of lesser known and local bottles of soda.

It's easier to cross the road here since there's a tunnel under the road. This way you don't have to worry about opening and closing gates, or hopping fences if the gates are locked.

Compressco Campground

Highlight • Rest Area

The Green Swamp West Tract provides several camping options FOR FREE! The Compressco Campground is my favorite. It has lots of trees, fire rings, water (recommend filtering), a shelter and port-a-potty. The Ashley Campground is set up for equestrian camping. The McNeil Campground is accessible from SR 471. In addition are several hike-up primitive sites adjacent to the Florida Trail.
