View of Hengebach Castle

Highlight • Viewpoint

Very nice castle located above Heimbach.
The castle was first mentioned in 1106 as the property of the lords of Hengebach. The castle later fell to the Count of Jülich. In 1687 the castle fell victim to a fire. The restorations started in 1904 were destroyed in the Second World War and later resumed. The keep, the remains of the palace and the castle walls have been preserved from the original castle. The castle was rebuilt in 2009 and has been used as an art academy ever since.

With the construction of the Rurtalsperre 1934-1938 and its expansion 1955-1959, a large part of the old Woffelsbach in the Rursee disappeared. At the same time, tourism in Woffelsbach began, initially in the 1930s and received a significant boost with the second expansion phase of the Rurtalsperre (1955-1959) and the founding of the Yacht Club Rursee in 1956. Today, Woffelsbach is home to more than 15 sailing clubs. Camping sites, sailing schools, apartments and private weekend houses were built. In the years 2012 to 2014, a new center with parks directly on the lake and a lakeside terrace with a lakeside stage was created.

The RurUfer cycle path is a long-distance cycle path that runs from the source in the High Fens near Botrange in Belgium through the Eifel to the mouth of the Maas near Roermond in the Netherlands. You cycle for over 170 kilometers through hilly forests and idyllic landscapes, always following the Rur. Along the way you pass through many villages worth seeing and there is always something interesting to discover. This makes the RurUfer cycle path a very varied cycling experience: netreisetagebuch.de/rurufer-radweg

Monschau Old Town

Highlight • Settlement

Shortly before reaching the old town, there is a top vantage point on the corpse alley. Nicely located, with a wonderful view of the evangelical church and the Red House, among other things.
