Wehebach Dam

Highlight • Monument

The Wehebach Dam is located between Hürtgenwald in the Düren district and Stolberg (Rhineland) in the Aachen city region in North Rhine-Westphalia. It was put into operation in 1983 for flood protection, drinking water supply and to raise low water levels. Below the dam, the Wehebach continues to flow into the Inde and the Rur. The dam belongs to the Eifel-Rur Water Association (WVER).

Dam of the Wehebach dam

Highlight • Viewpoint

If you don't want to be part of mass tourism, you're in good hands here. I often use the routes around the Wehebachtalsperre on long weekends or Sundays, because the North Eifel Nature Park is often overcrowded then. Another advantage is the condition of the paths. They are easy to ride even after a long period of rain. However, single trails are a real rarity in the area. One highlight is definitely the large beaver dams on the Rote Wehe.

Wehebachtalsperre Viewing Tower

Highlight • Viewpoint

An elevated vantage point directly on the dam offers a view over the barrier structure and parts of the lake. The only leisure activities permitted are hiking and cycling, as the lake is not approved for water sports due to its character as a drinking water reservoir. Due to its location in a wooded area, the reservoir offers the opportunity for primarily ornithological nature observations.

Wenau Monastery

Highlight • Religious Site

Alter Klosterhof: great facility!
When the Wenau monastery was dissolved in 1802, the church was consecrated to the parish church and the monastery buildings were used as an estate.

Merode Castle

Highlight • Castle

Impressive and large moated castle.
The local aristocratic residence has been owned by the Merode family since 1200.
An eventful history, most recently bombed during the war, laboriously rebuilt...
Then in 2000 there was a devastating fire - restored in 2009.
