In 1990 the Marienbrücke was completely renovated. A sculpture of the bridge saint Maria was also commissioned. This was made by the sculptor Anton Ferstl from Penzberg and set up on the new bridge in December 1990. Several local politicians and art experts voted in favor of the Penzberg artist's draft “Maria mit Kind” in a selection committee. He created a bronze sculpture of a self-confident young woman with a lively toddler. However, there were soon numerous and violent protests against the sculpture from conservative Catholics due to the unusual depiction of Mary, in the course of which the figure of Mary was defamed as a “whore” and “beach chick” and the artist was insulted. The baby Jesus was also not liked and was described as a "terrible freak". Strict believers demanded the "swift desecration" of this "indescribable blasphemy". The ordaining pastor, who would have liked the sculpture to be "a little different, more devotional, more sacred", was surprised by the extent of the protests and exposed to hostilities. Signatures were collected, Minister of the Interior Stoiber and Prime Minister Max Streibl were asked to intervene. But even the Ordinariate of the Archdiocese found that there was no reason to remove the figure. There were numerous proponents of the Madonna of the Bridge, who saw the figure as an "artistically sophisticated modern sculpture" that "fits into our time". The dispute was widely reported in national media including television.
