Ilm Weir, Mellingen and Untermühle

Highlight • Monument

The Ilmwehr in Mellingen is located directly on the Thuringian town chain (cycle path from Eisenach to Altenburg). There is also a nice rest area. The weir belongs to the Untermühle, a cultural monument.

Leutra Valley

Highlight (Segment) • Gorge

Especially recommended in summer as it is nice and cool. It's great to see how quickly nature has regained its realm after the A4 was dismantled.

The Johannisberg is a prominent offshoot of the Wöllmisse, a shell limestone plateau east of Jena. The spur of land that drops steeply towards the Saale valley north of the Alt-Lobeda district bears the remains of two important fortifications from the late Bronze Age and the early Middle Ages. As a result of several archaeological excavations and finds being recovered since the 1870s, they are among the few structures from this period in Thuringia that have been examined.

Jena Paradise Park

Highlight • Rest Area

The paradise is criss-crossed by cycling and hiking trails, which are used very regularly. It is also a good place to relax for me, especially when I'm cycling across Jena. The fairy tale fountain is a highlight, just like the Südbad (Schleichersee) and the beach bar. Always beautiful! 😉

Johannistor (Jena City Gate)

Highlight • Monument

You could get into the city through three city gates controlled by city guards: the Saaltor in the east, the Johannistor in the west and the Löbdertor in the south. Three corner towers are still preserved today, the names of which indicate their later use or construction: the powder tower in the northwest, i.e. at the highest point of the city fortifications, the anatomy tower in the southwest and the Red Tower in the southeast. Only the foundation of the castle tower at today's university main building can be seen. Saaltor and Löbdertor were demolished in the 19th century. Only the Johannistor has withstood the change of time until today.

Asphalt Cycle Path to Jena

Highlight • Cycleway

Super smooth asphalt. However, towards the Mühltal towards Jena there is still a gravel section, in the Mühltal there is again a very good paved bike path separated from the B7.

In 2021, not only the district road between Lehnstedt and Kleinschwabhausen is to be renovated. A new cycle path will then also be built between the two villages and close the last gap in the chain of cities between Weimar and Jena. The costs for this section are estimated at around 700,000 euros.
