Rheinfelden Town Hall

Highlight • Historical Site

Rheinfelden Town Hall

Centrally located, the town hall with its impressive baroque facade, massive tower and beautiful courtyard stands in the middle of Rheinfelden's old town.

An Austrian coat of arms on a Swiss town hall?

After the town hall burned down in 1531, it was rebuilt. The tower with its crenellated crown dates back to the Zähringer period. The baroque facade from the 18th century shows the coats of arms of Austria, the county of Hauenstein, Laufenburg, Säckingen, Rheinfelden, and the Truchsessen family.

Rheinfelden belonged to the Habsburgs and thus to Austria for almost 1000 years. Today, the entire city administration is located in the historic building.

Rudolf: The King of Rheinfelden.

When you enter through the gate on the left, there is a cast of the gravestone of Rudolf von Rheinfelden († 1080). The former court and market arcades are also here.

Albrechtsbrunnen on Albrechtsplatz, Rheinfelden
Archduke Albrecht VI stands proudly above the fountain and overlooks the cosy Albrechtsplatz. The popular attraction previously stood in a different place for a long time.
Named after the Austrian Archduke Albrecht VI.
The Albrechtsbrunnen was first mentioned in 1442. However, the Rheinfelden banner bearer only received his current name around a hundred years later - that of Archduke Albrecht VI (1418-1463). The fountain figure is a copy. The original, created in 1542, has been kept in the Fricktal Museum since its restoration in 1958/59.
The fountain received a new trough in 1539 and 1618, and the current double trough dates from 1850.
Albrechtsbrunnen or Spitalbrunnen.
The fountain once stood directly next to the city hospital and was therefore also called the Spitalbrunnen. The hospital and adjacent properties were demolished in 1869 in order to widen the Marktgasse to the north. Albrechtsplatz, named after the fountain and Archduke Albrecht VI, was built on part of the area that was freed up.

Rheinfelden Old Town

Obertorturm Rheinfelden
The Obertorturm is considered the most important tower of the medieval city fortifications of Rheinfelden. Strangely, its tower clock does not strike on the hour
Defensive tower of the city fortifications.
In Rheinfelden there are not only sights, but also hearing attractions. One of these is the Obertor. The tower clock bell strikes the upcoming full hour - for example 12 noon - even though it is only 11:53 a.m. and the hands show this correctly. But this is not the clockmaker's fault. The bell strikes too early on purpose.
It is said that this was once introduced as a service for the farmers who worked in the fields outside the city walls. In the evening the city gates were locked, and anyone who had not reached the city by the time the gates closed had to spend the night outside.

Rheinfelden–Magden Cycle Path

Highlight (Segment) • Cycleway

The route itself is unspectacular, but as a separate cycle path instead of the yellow bicycle lanes that are often used on the normal road in Switzerland, it is almost a luxury again. Relatively straight and relatively flat, so good for speed (downhill) or exhausting "false flat" ride uphill.
